Pachyderm Pastimes

This is my first automaton.  I always liked the old hand cranked egg beaters.  Love the gearing and the sound that they make.  I was wondering what I could transform an old beater into and I thought it would be good as a pedal powered propulsion unit for a boat.  My first thought for a driver was a human.  As I drew up plans I discovered the driver would need to be very wide.  So I came up with 2 ideas, an elephant and a chicken.  I liked the idea about a chicken riding an egg beater.  I posed the 2 ideas to my granddaughter and she chose the elephant.

The wide eyed elephant pedals furiously as the boat rocks up and down, the beaters churn and the waves sway back and forth.  A little window at the crank reveals a swimming fish.
