On this past Saturday the Grand Haven ArtWalk art market was held and it turned out to be a great day despite the poor weather. The art market was originally planned to be an outdoor event on the 100 block of Washington but because the weather took a turn for the worse , it was moved inside at the Historical Museum at 200 Washington. All the artists participating were set up on the 2nd floor. At first it was just the artists looking at each others work but then people started showing up and it was a lot of fun showing off and explaining my art. Many thanks for all the great comments and for the person purchasing The Kissers. I'm sorry I never got your name or email address but if you wander by my site and see this please contact me. Just wanted to let you know if there are ever any issues with the piece I am more than willing to resolve them. Thank you to all the fellow artists for your comments as well. It was great to share ideas and thoughts with you. The awards ceremony is this Thursday at the Historical Museum and I look forward to seeing you all again.

I have a couple new videos up and running. One is for When Goldfish Crackers Go Bad. This automaton is one of my favorites. I was having trouble with belts slipping on all the cranks driving the fish. I finally took it apart and made new pulleys and it is working great now. The other video is a new piece I've entitled Talking to a Teenager. Enjoy!
I have added a couple new pieces to my site. One is Ever Been To Stonehenge? This is the piece that was in the Art in Our City exhibit in Muskegon. The other piece(s) are Bugs 'n Blooms. Hope you enjoy them.
Grand Haven ArtWalk 2014 is officially open. Last night there was a reception for all the artists, sponsors, venue hosts and volunteers. It was a great night. My thanks to the Grand Haven DDA for putting on such a nice event.
Be sure to vist ArtWalk and see all the great art now through Oct 5. The Grand Haven ArtWalk dates are September 24 - October 12. I will have 2 pieces at the show. Dog Patrol will be on display at MacKite on Washington.
I will have a new piece I have entitled the Art Critics that will be on display at the Fire Barn Gallery on 5th. This is an exhibit of art from those artists participating in ArtWalk as a tribute to the Detroit Institute of Art. We were asked to view the art at the DIA and select an artist and a piece of art as inspiration and create or re-create a piece. It should be a great exhibit. I hope to post some photos of the Art Critics in a future post. This past Saturday I attended the Art Show in N Muskegon. It was a last minute idea. I was fortunate to be able to get in with such short notice. It was a beautiful day, even chilly in the morning. Lots of people had a chance to see and "interact" with my art. You can tell when people walk by and see an elephant on a boat they are thinking, "What in the world...." As soon as I start to crank the smiles appear and they turn and start enjoying. It was very gratifying to see the surprise and laughter that my pieces were able to generate from the very young to the very not so young. Thank you for all the compliments. I'll have to remember to take some pictures of the interaction but I was busy most of the time answering questions and demonstrating some of the work.
I have no shows planned for the rest of the year. I will have a couple pieces at Grand Haven's Art Walk 2014. That runs from Sept 24 - Oct 12 one of which will be brand new. I am working out the mechanics and sculpture. I haven't got a title yet but it should be fun. Had a great time in Grand Haven this past Sunday. A lot of people came by. They were a little shy at first but once they started cranking they had fun. Kids had no problem at all.
Thanks for all the compliments. Thank you to the purchaser of Puppy Love, I hope your dad enjoys it. Still getting into the swing of things after the vacation. Have to do some yard work and other chores before I jump back into designing and building. Just returned from a 3 week vacation with my wife. Now I'm busy getting ready for this Sunday's (August 3) Art Market in Grand Haven down by the waterfront next to the train. Should be busy with the Coast Guard Festival wrapping up. Should be fun.
I finished the Sweet Adelines automaton and is now up on the site with a video link. They are complete with color matching flowers in their hair and pearl necklaces. Please have a look and tell me what you think. Also new to the site is an automaton I call Puppy Love. It is a kissing automaton based again on the great mechanism from Peter Markey. My interpretation is of a man/boy and man's best friend. We've had dogs for for 25 years, although we are dogless now, and there is nothing like the exuberant affection of a dog. Check out the video and other photos on the automata page. I am pleased to say that the Kissers automaton has been sold to a very nice couple as an anniversary present. A new one is in the works and should be ready soon. I decided to try a different hair-do. What do you think?
Last night was the artist's reception for the "Art in Our City" exhibition. It was a very nice event and I'm pleased to say that my piece received an honorable mention. My thanks to the 2 judges, Tamara Fox and Stephanie Wooster. It was good to hear that Muskegon hopes to develop more events focusing on art and local artists. Be sure to check out the 2 exhibition sites, Bettye Clarke-Cannon Gallery at the Frauenthal Center and the new Red Lotus Art Gallery located in the basement of the Century Club building just down from the Unruly Brewing Co.
